The town of Sylvan Lake is considered one of the major tourism destination resorts in Alberta. It sees about 1.3 million people per annum. The construction of the Alberta Central Railway between 1910 and 1914 linking Red Deer to Rocky Mountain House helped develop Sylvan Lake into a town. It is located in the county of Red Deer, 20km west of Red Deer, 161km north of Calgary, and 161km south of Edmonton.
